The Grand Tour

When someone comes into our homes for the first time, and we give them the grand tour: We walk from room to room, leading and guiding them, saying, “Here is our living room, family room, my office, and the backyard. Why don’t we complete this ritual for our new animal companions upon arrival to join our family?

We know and have experienced that animals do not like closed doors. Many have shared this view, like it is a general sentiment in the animal community. They need a tour (on leash or off leash) of the dwelling they will spend the rest of their lives inhabiting with their new family.

What if we indulged them? Leash them up, carry them or casually stroll into each room, cubby, and closet, especially closets, and let them smell. Explain whose space this is. Let them know what you prefer, which spaces are okay, while you are at work or away.  Introduce them to their space; introduce their cat tower or bolster bed(s) to them. Get them acquainted with the whole home, inside and out.

If you tend to keep doors closed, frequently walk through them with your animal, and let them inspect every couple of months. This helps them work through their aversion toward closed doors. They can now reduce unnecessary stress or anxiety perhaps caused by fear of the unknown. They can bring more sunlight and joy into their safe space.

Animals are curious and intuitive beings. While simultaneously wanting to protect us, they need to know what there is to protect. They need to be included in decisions that affect them. They deserve the love and respect they so freely give us.

Their gratitude is expressed by adorable wagging tails, as if to say: “Thank you for including us. We love you to the moon and back. We appreciate being included and honored in this way.”

Signed - Your loving companions who share your lives, hearts and homes.
